Σοῦ δὲ ποιοῦντος ἐλεημοσύνην, μὴ γνώτω ἡ ἀριστερά σου τί ποιεῖ ἡ δεξιά σου·
But when you give alms, do not let your left hand know what your right hand is doing,
But when you give alms, do not let your left hand know what your right hand is doing,
Therefore, when you give alms, do not sound a trumpet before you, as the hypocrites do in the synagogues and in the streets, so that they may be honored by men. Amen I say to you, they have received their reward.
* honored, glorified, praised
Take heed that you do not give your alms before men, to be seen by them; otherwise you have no reward from your Father who is in Heaven.
Be you therefore perfect, just as your Father who is in Heaven is perfect.
And if you greet your friends only, what are you doing more than others? Do not even the tax collectors do that?
* friends or loved ones
For if you love those who love you, what reward have you? Do not even the tax collectors do the same?
so that you may be the sons of your Father who is in Heaven; for He causes His sun to rise on the evil and on the good, and sends rain on the righteous and on the unrighteous.
But I say to you, Love your enemies, bless those who curse you, do good to those who hate you, and pray for those who despitefully use you, and persecute you,
You have heard that it was said, ‘You shall love your neighbor and hate your.’
Give to the one who asks you, and to the one who wants to borrow from you, do not turn away.
